Private Benjamin (1980)
Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn), is a spoiled woman, who’s getting ready to marry for the second time. All is well, but the big problem comes during the wedding night. Aside of not being a particularly good lover, her husband has a heart attack and dies, leaving Judy both unsatisfied and a widow.
He is so shaken by this, that she leaves it all behind to enroll in the army.
Let’s say that I can’t consider this movie to be as hilarious as others presented it in the reviews, but there were some scenes that made me roll on the floor in laughter. Imagine a 28 wealthy woman getting to Fort Biloxi and asking if the uniforms do come in something else than green and where do they keep the yachts. After realizing the army is not a 5 star hotel, she suddenly decides she doesn’t like and wants to quit.
We’re taking through her military career start and all those funny things happening to her. Well, funny to us, I assume a person who’s dealing with such a wake up new life style doesn’t really enjoy the change.
Armand Assante is doing his “sexy, sexy, sexy” role as her new lover, the one who “teaches” her that making love can be pretty pleasing. He’s a rich gynecologist she falls in love with.
Overall the movie under-delivers, if you expect many funny situations and I believe they go too fast over her military beginnings, the moment that could have provided more and more funny scenes. Still the movie is enjoyable and you will find yourself laughing uncontrollably.
